Chapter Eleven

A squad car dropped me off at home, and after a quick shower, I spent the day in bed. Tish and Pearl were watching my every move along with Ivy. She’d taken the day off work to make sure I got my sleep.

It’s really hard to sleep when you’re being watched.

Eventually, the long night of rescue with high adrenaline and no arrest caught up with me. I wanted the bad guy behind bars. It should have been enough for me that we saved the girls. They would all live. The Voodoo doll had even worked when we’d needed it. Things could be worse.

Ivy woke me up to take my pills and eat some soup and homemade sourdough bread for lunch, then promptly sent me back to bed.

It was easier to sleep after that. I crashed hard and didn’t want to wake up when Ivy shook me.

“Time for dinner,” she said.

“No, I need to sleep more,” I yawned.

“I think you’ve slept too much. Matt brought that fried shrimp, French fry and garlic bread pyramid thing you like.” Ivy tugged off my covers.

“I look like crap,” I said.

“He doesn’t care. Gunnar is here, too. He did some training at the club today, but he wanted to see how you’re doing.” She tossed me a hair brush. “I’ll make more coffee, and we’ve got ice cream for dessert.”

“I want cold Diet Coke,” I said.

“You need brush your teeth and get downstairs. I’ll have your Diet Coke and lots of cocktail sauce for the shrimp. Hurry.” She shooed the animals downstairs for their dinner.

Teeth brushed, hair combed back into a ponytail and a spritz of perfume, and I headed downstairs.

Matt looked like he needed a nap. “Did you get any rest?” I asked.

He shrugged. “Big case. Lots of paperwork and everyone wants the guy.”

“I do too, but without rest, you won’t be as sharp,” I said.

Gunnar and Ivy handed out the meals, and I sat, sipping my drink.

“Any leads?” I asked.

“They’re still running the DNA and fibers from where we found the girls. No one has any description or name,” Matt said.

I squirted ketchup on my plate then dumped some cocktail sauce next to it. I’d never get used to crawdads, but I loved fried shrimp and fries.

“Kimmie said he was a middle-aged white guy but she was still, you know...detoxing,” I said.

“Not much help,” Matt said. “If it’s even true.”

“What about the stalker? Can’t we arrest him? He tried to attack De and hit Gunnar,” Ivy said.

Matt shook his head. “De went after the zombie and hit his window. She provoked things. He could claim self-defense.”

“He’s stalking her,” Greg pointed out as he turned from the stairs and joined us in the kitchen.

“I checked. He’s not out front now. I don’t think he’ll do that again. I ran the plates on the car he had. Stolen. I can pick him up for that, but he’d be out in no time on bail, assuming his master will pay it.” Matt sighed.

“But he won’t stop.
